The Khamak is a stringed percussion instrument originating in India.The Khamak consists of three basic parts. A bowl which is often made out of wood is connected by several strings to another, smaller piece (also usually made out of wood). The bowl is held under the arm holding the smaller piece in the hand of same arm. Finally, the strings are plucked by the other hand while adjusting the tension of strings creating the desired sound.
As a musical instrument
What it is: A stringed percussion folk instrument, also known as a gubgubi or gabguba. It is often used for rhythmic accompaniment in folk music, particularly Baul music.
How it works: The instrument consists of a wooden bowl, a smaller piece of wood, and one or two strings connecting them. The player holds the bowl under one arm and plucks the strings with the other hand. The tension on the strings is controlled by the hand holding the smaller piece, which creates different tones.
Origin: Primarily from the folk music traditions of Bengal, Odisha, and Northeast India.
