Kantha stitch is a very old type of stitchery, which has a very ancient history. It is a popular handicraft of Santiniketan in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The designs of this stitch are often made in traditional or artistic styles. For example, traditional paintings like Patachitra are seen in the designs of Kantha stitch.
The Kantha stitch work of Santiniketan is famous for its beautiful, simple and eye-catching designs. Due to the design, craftsmanship and uniqueness of this art, Kantha stitch has been recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) of West Bengal.
The beauty of this stitch is developed through the perfect craftsmanship done by the women of the village. They show skill and talent in every step from selecting the raw material to creating the design.
